Matt Jones, a world-class top-ranked keynote speaker, will be blessing us with his uplifting life story and giving us his secret to survival, guaranteed to be funny, motivational, educational, and memorable.  Bonus…We will be giving away his book “Life’s a Marathon” to some very lucky convention attendees.  Stayed tuned for how to qualify for the book.

Dom Tursi, Court Reporter Extraordinaire, is the granddaddy of court reporting!   With 56 years of reporting under his belt, he’s sure to have oodles of exciting things to share!  Can you believe he had a PERFECT paper on a 280 WPM Q&A, winning the NY State Shorthand Speed Contest three – yes, three – times!  How about being a World Shorthand Speed Champion with only 24 errors in five minutes on a 300 WPM Q&A, a record that remains unbroken to this day?  Yes, we are indeed lucky he agreed to come to our convention.

Would you like to hear about what’s happening in the world of cannabis?  (Or if you’re an expert already…shhh).  We’ve got it covered!  We’ll be hearing from NM Department of Health Director Kenny Vigil.  He can tell you all you need to know about that funny little green plant!  Sorry, he won’t be handing out any samples!

Vicente Griego is an adjunct faculty member at the University of New Mexico, a guest lecturer, and a featured TED talks participant, as well as wearing many other hats including being a world-renowned Flamenco singer and dancer.  We have asked him to speak to our membership on terminology and use of language with etiology in Spanish that is unique to New Mexicans, especially in Northern New Mexico.  Spanish spoken here “differs notably from the Spanish spoken in other parts of Hispanic America,” according to an article regarding New Mexico.  That article can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mexican_Spanish.

We feel that he is particularly qualified to educate us on the uniqueness of the language stemming from the history of New Mexico.  Being educated on regional words and phrases, as well as  “Spanglish” (Spanish and English) words and phrases that are used heavily in our state by a large percentage of the Hispanic population in New Mexico will be invaluable to court reporters in courts, in deposition suites, and in captioning situations.  To help us with spelling and pronunciation, including the heavy accents that we hear on a daily basis, Mr. Griego will be providing us with a glossary of terms we are likely to hear only in New Mexico.

Tickets for the tablao flamenco show on Saturday April 6 can be purchased at http://www.tablaoflamenco.org/.  The coupon code (for a 15% discount) is  LocalTreasures,   one word, L and T capped.

Last, but certainly not least, we will have a seminar titled ”Court Reporting on Nightmare Street,” an audience-participation extravaganza, emceed by The Honorable Alan Malott.   We want to hear from you on your biggest court reporting nightmare.  We know there’s lots to learn on handling situations that we could never have learned about in school.  This is a chance to learn from the best…ALL OF US!  And there will be a prize for the WORST NIGHTMARE!

We hope we have inspired you to meet up with your colleagues and attend the convention this year.  We have worked extra hard to plan fun and exciting seminars, and we have a special room rate at Hotel Chaco that will be offered to all attendees throughout the summer, not just during the convention.  If you haven’t been to Hotel Chaco, you might want to check it out.  The open-air bar overlooking most of Albuquerque should be on your bucket list!
